The local community is reeling in shock following the brutal murder of 19-year-old Sharon Atieno, also known as Nicole, whose mutilated body was discovered in a banana plantation early Friday morning, November 8, 2024.
Sharon was last seen leaving her home in Thindigwa, Karuri, around 10 p.m. the previous night to take a phone call and get some fresh air, leaving her roommate behind.
Her friend, Shallet Vudembu, grew concerned when she was unable to reach Sharon later that night.
“The previous day she had confided in me about her mother’s death, expressing how painful this month was for her. That’s the only issue I knew she was struggling with,” Vudembu recollected.
Fredrick Njiraini Kimani, the owner of the farm where Sharon’s body was found, described the harrowing moment he discovered her lifeless form.
“I went to check the farm, and as I approached, I realized the girl was not breathing. I found her already dead,” he recounted.
The Kiambaa police, led by OCPD Pius Mwathi, are investigating the tragic incident and are currently analyzing Sharon’s last communications and M-Pesa transactions for potential leads.
An autopsy is scheduled for November 13, 2024, aimed at uncovering the cause of death as her family seeks justice.
Sharon’s uncle, Michael Olewe, urged the authorities to ensure justice for his niece.
“We are asking for justice to be served. We have now left the investigation in the hands of the DCI,” he stated.
This heartbreaking case adds to a disturbing trend, with over 97 femicide cases reported across the country in the last three months, raising concerns about the ongoing struggle against gender-based violence in Kenya.
