Transport along the Matuu-Mwingi Road in Kitui County was temporarily disrupted on Friday as Christian faithful gathered to conduct prayers, seeking divine intervention following a series of fatal road accidents along the stretch.
Members of the Interdenominational Faith Fellowship blocked the road, singing hymns and making declarations to cleanse what they believe is a cursed road.
The road, constructed in 1985, has been the site of numerous accidents, leading the faithful to take action.
“We have lost children, young men, and women on this road,” said Rev. Martha, one of the participants.
“We saw it fit to conduct prayers and cleanse it from the devil, who is using this road to eradicate God’s people.”
Pastor Onesmus Kaura and Pastor Titus Donye echoed the sentiments, calling for divine protection and condemning what they described as “evil spirits” responsible for the accidents.
Traffic was temporarily halted as the faithful carried placards and prayed.
The Christians also called on the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to construct barriers at critical points like Matuu School to prevent further fatalities.
This incident follows a tragic accident in June 2022, where 11 people lost their lives, further fueling concerns over the road’s safety.
