Tremors Rattle Nairobi, Residents Report Shaking Across City

Written by Lisa Murimi

Panic gripped parts of Nairobi on Wednesday morning as residents reported experiencing tremors that shook buildings and disrupted daily routines.

The suspected earth tremor occurred between 10:30 a.m. and 10:40 a.m., prompting concern across the city.

Affected areas included Westlands, Parklands, Kangemi, and suburbs such as Mlolongo, where the first signs of ground movement were reportedly felt.

Residents described the tremor as a weak shaking that lasted several seconds, causing buildings and household items to rattle.

“I felt the ground move beneath me while seated in my office,” said a resident from Westlands. “It was brief, but enough to cause alarm.”

Earthquake Monitor, a global seismic tracking website, confirmed receiving unverified reports of ground shaking near Nairobi.

“If confirmed, more accurate data should emerge in the coming minutes,” it said, adding that the tremor was detected around 07:36 GMT.

This incident comes just days after a powerful tremor rocked Kenya’s coastal region, affecting towns like Malindi, Watamu, and Vipingo.

That quake, reported on April 28, reached a depth of 10km and was described as the strongest in the region’s recent history.

Authorities have yet to confirm the magnitude and epicentre of the Nairobi tremor. Meanwhile, no injuries or significant damage have been reported.

Experts urge calm and advise residents to stay alert for official updates as investigations continue.
