Trump Accuses Obama of “Treason” Amid Questions on Ghislaine Maxwell Case

On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump made a bold accusation against his predecessor, former President Barack Obama, claiming without evidence that Obama committed “treason.”

Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump referenced documents declassified by his intelligence chief Tulsi Gabbard last Friday, which he alleged reveal the Obama administration’s role in initiating the probe into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

“It’s there, he’s guilty. This was treason,” Trump said, adding, “They tried to steal the election, they tried to obfuscate the election. They did things that nobody’s ever imagined, even in other countries.”

The claims were made as Trump diverted questions regarding the Justice Department’s decision to interview Ghislaine Maxwell, the former girlfriend of the late financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Maxwell, who is currently serving a lengthy prison sentence, was convicted of aiding Epstein in the sexual abuse of underage girls.

In response, Obama’s office issued a strongly worded statement dismissing Trump’s comments as a political distraction.

Spokesperson Patrick Rodenbush said, “Out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response. But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one.”
