Trump Slaps New U.S. Tariffs on Drugs, Trucks and Furniture

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced sweeping new tariffs on pharmaceuticals, heavy trucks, furniture, and cabinetry, set to take effect on October 1, 2025.

According to the White House, pharmaceutical imports will attract a 100 percent duty unless the manufacturer is actively constructing a facility in the United States.

Heavy trucks will face a 25 percent tariff, kitchen cabinets and vanities 50 percent, and upholstered furniture 30 percent.

The measures are expected to have global ripple effects, including in Africa. Kenya, which sources part of its pharmaceutical and medical supplies from U.S.-linked markets, may experience price adjustments and supply chain delays if manufacturers pass on the increased costs.

The announcement comes at a time when Kenya is expanding its healthcare programmes, including the rollout of the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) and scaling up access to essential drugs.

The tariffs form part of Trump’s broader trade agenda aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing and reducing reliance on imports.
