Trump wants to speak with Pope Leo XIV, says ‘He’s a surprise choice’

US President Donald Trump told Fox News in an interview broadcast on Wednesday that he would like to speak to Pope Leo, the first pontiff from the United States.

“He was really a surprise choice,” Trump said in an interview conducted on Monday for the network’s “Hannity” program.

The new pope, elected on May 8, will hold his first general audience on May 21.

Robert Prevost, the choice of the world’s Catholic cardinals to serve as leader of the 1.4-billion-member Church, is the first pope from the United States and a relatively unknown figure on the global stage.

Aged 69 and originally from Chicago, Pope Leo spent most of his career as a missionary in Peru and became a cardinal only in 2023. He has given few media interviews.
