Trump’s New Tariffs Trigger Global Trade Storm

Written by Lisa Murimi

US President Donald Trump has announced new trade tariffs, sparking concern worldwide.

The European Union (EU) and other US allies have strongly criticized the move, warning of severe economic consequences.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the tariffs would create “chaos” and harm millions of people.

France, Germany, and Italy are particularly affected, with industries like car manufacturing, luxury goods, and wine exports at risk.

French President Emmanuel Macron has called an urgent meeting with business leaders to discuss the impact.

In China, however, the tariffs may work in President Xi Jinping’s favor. While they will hurt Chinese businesses selling to the US, they allow Xi to present China as a supporter of free trade, unlike the US.

Beijing has already launched a media campaign against the tariffs.

The UK has also been affected, facing a 10% tax on exports to the US. While the government is relieved the damage isn’t worse, officials acknowledge the tariffs will disrupt industries, particularly car manufacturing. Talks with the US on a trade deal are ongoing.

India is also impacted, with a 26% tariff on its exports. Experts warn this could slow down the country’s economic growth. However, India’s electronics sector may benefit, as higher tariffs on Vietnam could shift trade in India’s favor.

Meanwhile, African nations, including South Africa and Kenya, are hit hard. South Africa condemned the tariffs, calling them unfair and harmful to economic progress.

Trump’s move has set the stage for global trade tensions, with countries now considering how to respond.
