The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced a recruitment drive to fill 46,000 teaching positions, with the majority designated for Junior Secondary Schools.
This move comes after months of unrest in the education sector and increasing pressure from teachers’ unions, following strikes in August.
Published in the government bulletin *MyGov* On October 1, the announcement signals a significant change in government policy.
Teachers had long expressed concerns about their job security, with many working on internship contracts.
Now, the government has promised to confirm thousands of these teachers as permanent employees.
Out of the available posts, 39,550 are for Junior Secondary Schools, 6,000 for primary schools, and 450 for secondary schools.
Applicants for primary schools need a P1 certificate, while those applying for Junior and secondary schools require a diploma in education.
All candidates must be registered with the TSC and are expected to apply online by October 7, 2024.
This recruitment comes after President William Ruto reversed his earlier decision to freeze teacher hiring due to budget constraints.
The government has now allocated Ksh18.6 billion to cover the recruitment and confirmation of these teachers on permanent and pensionable terms.
