The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced a nationwide retraining programme for senior school teachers in preparation for the rollout of Competency-Based Education (CBE) under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
The retooling exercise, scheduled to run from July 28 to August 15, 2025, will be conducted through face-to-face sessions at designated venues across various counties. According to an internal memo addressed to TSC’s Regional and County Directors, the training targets teachers in regular secondary schools, Special Needs Education (SNE) institutions, and vocational training centres.
“The County Directors will be required to select teachers for retooling and trainers of teachers,” the memo stated.
The training will align teachers with the three newly introduced senior school pathways under the CBC:
- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) – covering both pure and applied sciences as well as technical subjects.
- Social Sciences – including languages, humanities, and business studies.
- Arts and Sports Science – encompassing music, visual and performing arts, and physical education.
The CBC senior school rollout for Grades 10 to 12 is set to begin in January 2026, marking the final phase of the curriculum’s national implementation. Previous phases have already been successfully rolled out at the pre-primary, primary, and junior secondary levels.
The TSC emphasized that teacher selection for the programme will be guided by the current staffing levels in individual schools and institutions. The retooling initiative is aimed at ensuring that educators are well-equipped to deliver CBC effectively, particularly in fostering hands-on learning, critical thinking, creativity, and talent development among learners.
The retraining of senior school teachers comes as the first CBC cohort, which began the new curriculum in 2019, prepares to transition into senior secondary school next year.
