The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has deregistered 73 teachers, effectively barring them from working as tutors in any capacity.
According to a statement issued by TSC boss Nancy Macharia, the teachers are not permitted to teach in any learning institution in the country under the TSC Act (2012).
Among the offenses committed by these teachers were misappropriation of funds, an intolerable code of conduct, immoral behavior, and chronic absenteeism.
TSC, therefore, felt that they have breached the code of conduct and regulations.
“Pursuant to section 30 of the TSC Act (2012), the Commission wishes to publish names of teachers who have been removed from the Register of Teachers. Further, under the law, these teachers cannot engage in teaching in any learning institution,” stated TSC.
According to the Act, any person who employs an unregistered teacher is liable to a fine of not less than Ksh100,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years or both.
In order to ensure effective service delivery, TSC has recently cracked the whip against unscrupulous teachers.
Due to indiscipline, the Commission deregistered 43 teachers in October 2021. TSC also fired 52 teachers in May 2021 for indiscipline, and in November 2020, over 50 teachers were removed from the Register of Teachers.
The move indicates an increase in the number of teachers facing dismissal, as opposed to the 71 tutors who were deregistered from 2017 to 2018.
