TSC to Permanently Employ 26000 Intern Teachers from July 1

Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers have been handed a reprieve after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) allocated funds to employ them on permanent and pensionable terms.

This was confirmed by National Assembly Education Committee Chairperson and Tinderet Member of Parliament Julius Melly.

In the 2024/25 financial year estimates and the supplementary II budget for the 2023/24 fiscal year submitted before Budget and Appropriations Committee chairperson, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, TSC will be allocated Ksh8.2 billion to permanently absorb the striking JSS teachers.

The Nancy Macharia-led commission will receive a further Ksh4.7 billion to hire 20,000 more JSS teachers.

“Further, Melly recommended that the TSC should convert the 26,000 interns into permanent employment beginning July 2024, and not January 2025 as proposed,” a report from the National Assembly indicated.

The Tinderet MP also assured that TSC has been allocated Ksh1 billion to promote teachers who had stagnated in one job group for a long period.

Melly further urged the Budget and Appropriations Committee to consider reinstating the Ksh4.9 billion allocated to the School Feeding Programme.
