The County Government of Turkana has officially taken over management of the Kalobeyei Modern Garage, marking a major step toward youth and women empowerment through vocational training, job creation, and economic inclusion.

Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai received the symbolic keys to the facility from UN Women’s Operations Manager Linner Ng’eno on the first day of his development tour of Turkana West. The handover ceremony, witnessed by Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus, County Secretary Amb. Richard Ekai, and several Members of County Assembly (MCAs), sets the stage for the garage to become a key driver of skills development and local enterprise.

“We appreciate UN Women and Peace Winds Japan for their investment in this project. We are committed to rolling out programs that will enhance the use of this garage to empower youth and women in Kalobeyei and across the county,” Governor Lomorukai said.

The garage, which features advanced vehicle diagnostics equipment and modern installations, is designed to function both as a commercial service centre and a technical training institution. It is expected to provide new career pathways, particularly for young women looking to enter the automotive mechanics industry as professionals or entrepreneurs.

UN Women’s Linner Ng’eno underscored the importance of the facility in transforming livelihoods and promoting peaceful coexistence between host communities and refugees in the region. “Our goal is to expand economic opportunities for women and youth. We believe this garage will be instrumental in achieving that,” she said.

The County Government has pledged to unveil a comprehensive plan outlining how the facility will be utilized, including training modules, internship placements, and entrepreneurship support programs.

The handover of the Kalobeyei Modern Garage signals a collaborative step forward in Turkana’s broader agenda of sustainable development, social inclusion, and economic empowerment.
