Public engagements held in Kalemgorok and Lokichar, Turkana County, have revealed deep-seated security concerns among residents, with locals calling on the government to urgently restore peace in the area.
The concerns were raised during a public participation exercise conducted by the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Energy on the proposed oil extraction project in the region.
Residents urged the government to prioritise security before commencing oil operations, warning that persistent insecurity could endanger both local communities and the safe transportation of the oil commodity.

They linked the rising insecurity to frequent attacks allegedly carried out by members of the neighbouring Pokot community, citing cases of livestock raids that have resulted in deaths, injuries and displacement of residents.
The Turkana and Pokot communities have historically faced recurring security challenges, largely attributed to banditry and long-standing border disputes.
Turkana elders called for comprehensive and impartial disarmament across all affected communities, cautioning against selective disarmament, which they said often leaves one group vulnerable to attacks.

They further appealed for the establishment of additional security camps, increased patrols, and the adoption of a multi-agency security approach to safeguard civilians and their property.
Local leaders also emphasised the need for improved infrastructure, particularly road networks, to enhance the mobility and rapid response of security personnel during emergencies.
Addressing residents, the Chairperson of the National Assembly’s Energy Committee, Hon. Gikaria, conveyed his condolences to families who lost loved ones and livestock in recent attacks.
He described the security situation as critical and assured residents that the government would act swiftly to find a lasting solution.
“Security is fundamental to the implementation of this project, and we must adopt a community-based approach to resolve these issues once and for all,” he said.
