Turkey Restricts Access to Major Online Platforms Amid Opposition Tensions

By Michelle Ndaga

Access to several popular online platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and WhatsApp, has been restricted across Turkey, according to global internet monitor NetBlocks.

The restrictions began around 20:45 GMT on Sunday, coinciding with calls by the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) for public rallies after police set up barricades near its Istanbul headquarters.

The Freedom of Expression Association in Turkey, which tracks censorship, confirmed the disruptions, while the Access Providers Union responsible for enforcing internet blocking orders has not issued a statement.

This comes just days after a separate outage affected Google services, including YouTube, across Turkey and parts of Europe, raising concerns over digital freedoms in the country.

Rights groups warn that such restrictions undermine free expression and often intensify during politically sensitive moments.
