Twist in Jirongo’s Death as Speaker Moses Wetang’ula records statement

The investigation into the tragic death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo continues to draw national attention.

According to The Standard, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula is among 28 individuals questioned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.

Jirongo died in a head-on collision on December 13, 2025, along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway near Eagol Petrol Station in Naivasha.

His Mercedes-Benz collided with a Busia-bound Climax bus, killing him instantly. Preliminary reports indicate that the accident occurred shortly after Jirongo performed a U-turn through the petrol station, with the car dragged approximately 25 metres from the point of impact.

The incident has sparked suspicions of foul play, particularly among Western Kenya political leaders. Questions have emerged about why Jirongo was in Naivasha, whether he was driving himself, and why the airbags in his vehicle did not deploy.

Former Vihiga senator George Khaniri, who gave a statement to the DCI on January 7, urged investigators to address these issues, emphasizing that clarity is needed to determine whether the crash was accidental or deliberate.

Wetang’ula recounted his last meeting with Jirongo at Oasis Restaurant on December 12, which lasted nearly an hour. He left at 9:30 pm, while Jirongo stayed until 11 pm before departing. Hours later, Jirongo’s life was tragically cut short.

DCI Director Mohamed Amin maintains that the accident appears unintentional, but the investigation remains active.

A multi-disciplinary team, including forensic experts, is analyzing evidence such as the bus manifest and amateur videos from the scene. Statements have been recorded from Jirongo’s family, the Oasis proprietor, bus passengers, and other witnesses.

The probe, led by special DCI bureau director Martin Nyuguto, seeks to conclude the case and forward findings to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The nation awaits clarity on whether this was a tragic accident or a more sinister plot.
