Two Children Die After Eating Snacks from a Local Shop in South Africa

Written by Joyce Nzomo

Two children, aged three and four, have tragically died after eating snacks bought from a local spaza shop in Jouberton, near Klerksdorp, in South Africa’s Northwest Province.

The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon and has prompted an official investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS). Police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened, though the exact cause of death is still being determined.

Mokgwabone also urged the grieving community to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands. “The police would like to urge the public not to do anything unlawful and afford the police time to do their investigations,” he said.

This case adds to growing concerns across South Africa, where several children have reportedly fallen ill or died after consuming expired or contaminated food products from spaza shops. In response, the government has stepped up inspections and efforts to
ensure food sold in informal shops meets safety standards.

The Jouberton community remains in shock as authorities work to prevent further tragedies. Residents have been advised to be cautious when purchasing food from informal vendors and to report any suspicious or unsafe products to health officials.
