Tragedy struck Mutitu village in Mathira Constituency, Nyeri County, on Tuesday evening when two young siblings were killed in a mysterious house fire that has left the community reeling with grief and unanswered questions.
The fire broke out at around 7 p.m., engulfing the family’s home while the children were asleep. Despite desperate efforts by neighbours to put out the flames, an 8-year-old boy and his 4-year-old sister were unable to escape and died in the blaze.
According to relatives, the cause of the fire remains unclear. “There was a huge fire at home yesterday and my cousin’s children perished,” said Wizzy Chris, a family member, during an interview with Inooro TV. “We were returning from the hospital after picking up their mother when we got a call that the house was on fire.”
A third child, a Grade 9 student, survived the incident after managing to escape and alert neighbours. However, by the time help arrived, it was too late to rescue the two younger children.
What has further deepened the mystery, family members say, is that no fire had been lit in the house at the time. “We are asking authorities to investigate this matter, as we are wondering how the fire even started,” a relative said.
The family is now calling on authorities to conduct a full investigation into the cause of the fire. Meanwhile, residents of Mutitu village remain in mourning as questions continue to swirl around the tragic incident.
