Two detained after ammo found during Kanyonyoo bus search

Officers found 30 rounds of live ammunition hidden inside a backpack that had been left on a passenger seat.

On Tuesday, February 3, 2026, a multi-agency security team intercepted a public service vehicle at the Kanyonyoo roadblock in Lower Yatta Sub-County, Kitui, and arrested two suspects.

Officers found 30 rounds of live ammunition hidden inside a backpack that had been left on a passenger seat.

The vehicle was stopped along the Garissa–Thika Highway, a key route for multi-agency security checks.

The two suspects were taken to Kanyonyoo Police Station for processing, while the bus was detained as an exhibit for further investigation.

The National Police Service (NPS) stated that this operation is part of sustained efforts to combat the illegal movement of firearms and ammunition.

This incident follows a similar high-profile recovery at the same location in May 2025, where explosives were found hidden in milk cartons on a Meru-bound bus.
