Caroline Njoki Kuria and Gasper Rogasiani Asenga both directors of Crystal World Agencies company were arraigned in court today and charged with tax evasion.

It is alleged that the directors omitted from exercise duty returns amounting to Ksh 337.6m between the years 2015 and 2019.

Further, the company is charged with omitting exercise duty returns for production totaling 95,055 liters of spirit between the same period.

Appearing before Magistrate Muthoni Kamau at Milimani law courts, the two directors denied the charges.

Counsel Mwara Wabugu representing the accused told the court that KRA has been closing down businesses of innocent people in the name of revenue collection.

“Your honor, my clients are not the worse of the worst. When you are setting bail I urge you not to be so directed by what is in the charge sheet. KRA has been weaponized, my clients have been auctioned, they have nothing” said the defense lawyer in mitigation.

However, the mitigation did not convince the Court to grant lenient bail and bond.

The accused were each released on a bond of Ksh 5m with an alternative cash bail of Ksh 5m. the case will be mentioned on 31st March 2022.
