Two people died in a road accident on the Makutano–Sagana–Karatina dual carriageway at Kibirigwi Trading Centre in Kirinyaga County, prompting renewed calls for road safety along the busy highway.
The accident occurred at Kwa Mwega in Kibirigwi when a trailer transporting electricity poles collided with another vehicle as both headed towards Sagana from Karatina.
According to police, the 56-year-old trailer driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the rear of the other vehicle, dying on the spot. A second victim succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment in hospital.
Two other occupants, a 34-year-old woman and her three-year-old child, sustained injuries and were rushed to Karatina Hospital for treatment.
The wreckage of both vehicles was later towed to Sagana Police Station as investigations into the cause of the accident continue.
Speaking during Madaraka Day celebrations at Kiangai Primary School in Kiine Ward, Kirinyaga West Deputy County Commissioner John Mbugua expressed concern over the increasing number of accidents along the Makutano–Sagana–Karatina dual carriageway.
Mr. Mbugua urged motorists to adhere to traffic regulations and cautioned pedestrians to remain vigilant when using the road, noting that road safety is a shared responsibility.
His remarks come amid growing concern over frequent accidents reported along the dual carriageway, which has become a major transport corridor in the region.
