Two MPs Rescued After Going Missing In Tana River

Garsen MP Ali Wario Guyo and his Galole counterpart Hiribae Buya were rescued around 3 a.m after a 10-hour ordeal on Tana River.

The two were part of an 18-team relief food distribution exercise when they went missing aboard a private boat on the Tana River.

Tana River County Commissioner Hassan Mohammed confirmed in the early hours of Sunday morning that all of the missing people had been rescued and were safe.

He also thanked all those who participated in the rescue operation and responded quickly to the emergency, including Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki and Defence CS Aden Duale.

“We have stayed alert the entire night to ensure that everyone who was on that boat,” said Mohammed adding that the 16 others included 2 MCAs and one child.

He further thanked all parties involved in the rescue exercise and responded immediately to the emergency, including Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki and Defence CS Aden Duale.

“I would thank everyone who was involved in this rescue mission particularly the Red Cross who had sent the first boat and they even got lost four times but luckily they found the missing persons,” he added.

In an earlier statement, CS Kindiki announced that a multi-agency search and rescue team led by the Kenya Coast Guard had been dispatched overnight for the rescue mission.

The MPs and their aides were on their way to Garsen as part of a food distribution exercise for flood victims when they became lost in the river.

A video that has since gone viral shows legislators pleading for help in the aftermath of the incident, which occurred amid heavy rains that continue to pound several parts of the country.

The team, which was conducting rescue missions after the Tana River burst its banks, is thought to have vanished after losing contact with the flanking team.
