A tragic accident at Ainamoi Police Station in Kericho County has claimed the lives of two police officers who were electrocuted while installing a radio signal mast on Wednesday.
The incident occurred when the mast, which the officers were attempting to erect, collapsed and struck live power lines from a nearby utility pole.
According to a local administrator, the mast’s weight overwhelmed the officers, leading to its sudden fall and resulting in an instantaneous fatal electric shock.
The deceased include one officer from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and another from the general police service. Their names have not yet been made public as next of kin are being informed.
A civilian who was assisting the officers was also injured in the incident after suffering a mild electric shock. He was knocked to the ground but is said to be in stable condition at the Ainamoi Health Centre, where he is receiving treatment.
The bodies of the two officers were removed from the scene shortly after the incident and are believed to have been taken to Lazarus Funeral Home at Siloam Hospital in Kericho town.
Authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the mast installation and whether proper safety measures were followed. Local leaders and residents have expressed shock and sorrow over the deaths, with many calling for improved safety protocols during such installations.
The loss adds to a somber national mood, coming amid ongoing protests and civil unrest in various parts of the country.
Further updates are expected from the Kericho County Police Commander, who is set to issue an official statement later today.
