Two suspects have been arrested in Meru County following a robbery at Mungania Shopping Center on Wednesday evening, in an operation that also led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle and an abandoned vehicle believed to have been used in the crime.
According to a report from the National Police Service, the incident unfolded around 8:30 PM when a National Police Reservist (NPR) on duty in the area heard gunshots. Upon responding, the reservist spotted an armed individual carrying an AK-47. When challenged, the suspect dropped the weapon and fled on foot.
A coordinated response by officers from Kathare, Subuinga, and Buuri East Police Stations quickly followed. At the scene, police found an abandoned vehicle, which was searched and found to contain personal effects, two mobile phones, and a female suspect hiding inside. She was immediately arrested.
A second suspect was apprehended shortly after, attempting to conceal himself in a nearby residence.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the duo had been involved in a robbery targeting a local shop, during which the shop attendant sustained minor injuries. Both suspects are now in custody and will be arraigned in court.
The recovered firearm and vehicle have been secured for forensic examination as detectives work to establish the full scope of the suspects’ activities and any links to other crimes in the region.
