Two children have died after their house collapsed in Kariobangi estate in Sondu, Kisumu County, in a tragic incident that has left residents in shock.
The victims, aged 14 and 10, were sleeping when the single-room house caved in on Friday night, trapping them under the debris. Their 12-year-old sibling survived the collapse unhurt.
Area Chief Judith Omune said the three children had been left at home alone at the time, as their mother was away at work.
Neighbours and well-wishers responded quickly after the incident, rushing to the scene and managing to rescue the 12-year-old. However, efforts to save the two younger children were unsuccessful.
Chief Omune noted that preliminary findings suggest the house, along with others in the area, may have been structurally unsound, raising concerns about the safety of buildings in the neighbourhood.
Investigations have been launched to determine the exact cause of the collapse.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to a local morgue as grief-stricken residents struggled to come to terms with the tragedy.
