Two Slapped With Sh1 Million Fine for Vandalising Road Signage in Nakuru

A Nakuru court has slapped two men with a fine of Ksh1 million each or a one-and-a-half-year jail term for vandalising road infrastructure in Rongai Sub-County, Nakuru.

Kevin Barasa Nyongesa and James Juma Wekesa were found guilty of unlawfully removing a road bump signage along the Nakuru–Kabarak Road near Kabarak University.

The offence falls under Section 24(1) as read with Section 24(2) of the Scrap Metal Act No. 1 of 2015, which prohibits destruction of infrastructure.

The prosecution told the court that the signage, classified as essential road infrastructure, plays a crucial role in warning motorists and enhancing safety on busy highways.
Its removal, therefore, posed a serious danger to road users, particularly students and pedestrians frequenting the area.

Chief Magistrate Heston Nyaga handed down the sentence, noting the gravity of the offence and its potential to cause accidents and loss of life. He emphasised the need to deter such acts through tough penalties.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) welcomed the verdict and condemned the growing trend of vandalism targeting road infrastructure. In a statement, KeNHA urged citizens to safeguard road furniture and report any suspicious activity.

“Vandalism of infrastructure is not just illegal—it is dangerous. It puts the lives of motorists and pedestrians at risk,” KeNHA stated.

The Authority encouraged the public to report any incidents via its toll-free line, 0800 211 244, or at the nearest KeNHA office or police station.
