Officials from the Ministry of Education have been dispatched to Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High School in Kakamega County to investigate the deaths of two students.
The deaths are linked to a malaria outbreak at the school last month.
Stephen Barongo, Western Region Coordinator of Education, on Tuesday said that the team, led by the Kakamega County director of education Dickson Ogonya, is expected to submit the report to the Ministry of Education by tomorrow.
“We have instructed the ministry of education on the ground to visit the school and investigate the reports relating to the deaths of students and prepare a report that will be submitted to the Ministry of Education for action,” said Mr Barongo.
He said the officials will need to talk to students, teachers and other workers at the school before compiling their report.
The Nation reported that one of the students is reported to have had a pre-existing condition and succumbed while receiving treatment for malaria.
The other student was said to have experienced complications after undergoing a medical procedure.
The deaths are linked to a malaria outbreak at the school, where 28 students were hospitalized in late May with fever and diarrhoea.
Parents accused the school administration of failing to do enough while their children were in the hospital.
Other parents blamed the school’s administration for failing to notify them of the situation in a timely manner. The school has instructed parents to ensure that their children receive medical examinations and present the results when school resumes on July 12.
Dr Collins Matemba, the Kakamega County executive for Health Services, told the Nation that samples taken from the students who fell ill in May revealed they were suffering from malaria.
He stated that an investigation was carried out at the school by a team from the Ministry of Health’s Disease Surveillance and Outbreak Response Unit.
