The United States and the United Kingdom have called for a swift and transparent investigation into the mysterious death of Albert Ojwang while in police custody in Kenya. The two nations, through their embassies in Nairobi, joined a growing chorus of voices demanding justice and accountability over the incident that has sparked nationwide outrage.
In separate statements issued this week, both foreign missions expressed deep condolences to Ojwang’s family and emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law.
“The Embassy of the United States of America extends our condolences to the family and loved ones of Albert Ojwang during this time of mourning,” the U.S. Embassy said, noting its “concerns around the circumstances of Ojwang’s death.”
The U.S. further urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to carry out a thorough and timely investigation and called on the Kenyan government to provide full support to the authority in fulfilling its mandate.
Echoing the U.S. position, the British High Commission emphasized the need for a credible investigation. “We echo calls for a swift, independent, and thorough investigation into his death in custody. The rule of law, accountability, and free speech are vital pillars of any democracy,” the UK mission posted on the X platform.
Ojwang’s death while under police detention has ignited widespread condemnation from human rights organizations, religious leaders, and legislators, who have all called for transparency and justice. The case has reignited debate over police accountability in Kenya.
Several police officers linked to the incident have reportedly been interdicted, and IPOA has since launched formal investigations into the case.
As public pressure mounts, observers say the response to Ojwang’s death could mark a critical test of Kenya’s commitment to police reform and human rights protections.
