The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has dismissed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s resignation from the party, declaring it null and void.
The party stated that Gachagua ceased being a member the moment he was ousted as Deputy Party Leader following his impeachment.
In an official statement released hours after Gachagua announced his exit, UDA dismissed his move as mere theatrics.
“The ruling party, United Democratic Alliance (UDA), officially removed one, Rigathi Gachagua, as its Deputy Party Leader, which automatically revoked his membership,” the statement read.
The party further noted that political party resignations must be formally addressed to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP), not the media.
Gachagua’s resignation comes seven months after his impeachment and subsequent replacement by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
The party communicated the leadership changes to the ORPP in a letter dated January 22, 2025, citing a National Executive Committee (NEC) resolution from November 11, 2024.
In his resignation letter, Gachagua accused the Kenya Kwanza government of betraying the electorate, stating that it had failed to deliver on campaign promises. He criticised the regime’s five economic pillars — Agriculture, MSMEs, Housing, Healthcare, and the Digital Economy — branding them “centres of crime” that have yielded no meaningful results.
He further cited failed reforms in agriculture, healthcare, and housing, asserting that the party had abandoned its core vision of unity, justice, and economic inclusion in favour of “retrogressive philosophy.”
Despite his dramatic departure, UDA has insisted that Gachagua’s political future within the party had already been decided long before his public statement.
