UDA Summons MCA Who Filed Governor Mwangaza Impeachment

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has summoned Meru Member of County Assembly (MCA) Zipporah Kinya, who is behind the latest impeachment motion against Governor Kawira Mwangaza, to appear at the party headquarters tomorrow.

Kinya, who is also the deputy majority leader, has been asked to report to the party headquarters on Monday, July 22, 2024, to discuss the matter further and align on the way forward. The summons has been issued by acting party Secretary General Cleophas Malala.

In a letter to Kinya, Malala requested that she withdraw the motion “in the interest of the party’s cohesion and stability.” He noted that the current socio-political climate across the country calls for the party to demonstrate unity and strategic foresight.

Malala also informed Kinya that a party leadership meeting has been planned for Thursday where the matter will be discussed extensively. “Your presence and insights at these meetings will be crucial for our collective strategy and decision-making process,” he wrote.

This is not the first time that Kinya has tabled an impeachment motion against Governor Mwangaza. It is the third motion since she took office. The latest motion was tabled last week and accuses the governor of gross violation of the Constitution, gross violation of national and county laws, and abuse of office.

Kinya claimed that public petitions have been presented to the county assembly, including petition No. 5 of 2023 brought by 1,611 members of the public, and that statements have been sought by members of the county assembly on the various gross violations and instances of abuse of office by the governor. She said that several reconciliation efforts to resolve the issues raised by the public and members of the county assembly have failed to bear fruits prompting her to table a fresh ouster motion.

Kinya alleged that Governor Mwangaza’s continued stay in office has hampered the efficient delivery of services to the people of Meru County and brought her office, the deputy governor’s office, the assembly and its leadership, and the people of Meru into disrepute.

It remains to be seen how Kinya will respond to the summons from UDA and whether she will withdraw her impeachment motion against Governor Mwangaza.
