UEFA RAPID PLAN TO FINISH CHAMPIONS AND UEROPA LEAGUE

UEFA has come up with a new proposal for finishing the season as European football’s governing body hopes to see the Champions League campaign completed.

With Germany’s Bundesliga returning last weekend and ‘Project Restart’ in place to bring back Premier League football sometime next month, UEFA wants to bring back Europe’s premier continental competition.

And, according to Marca, we could be treated to a ‘final four’ tournament with both semi-finals and the final taking place in Istanbul, the city selected to host the 2020 Champions League final before the coronavirus pandemic began.

The competition was suspended in March before the round-of-16 ties had been completed, and every remaining second leg fixture must be played for the tournament to resume.

The new proposal would then see all the quarter-final ties played on a single-legged basis – rather than using the regular two-legged system – with the victors progressing to the ‘final four’ tournament in Turkey.

The governing body will announce their final decision for completing the Champions League on June 17.

On the same day, UEFA will reveal which 12 venues will be used in the rescheduled Euro 2020, which was due to take place this summer but will now be played next year across Europe.
