Uganda to Hold Memorial Service for Late Raila Odinga at All Saints Cathedral

A memorial prayer service in honour of the late former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga will be held at All Saints Cathedral, Nakasero, in Kampala on Tuesday, bringing together regional leaders and dignitaries to celebrate the life of one of Africa’s most influential political figures.

The service, scheduled to begin at 9am, will be led by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev Dr Steven Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu. It will serve as what organisers called “a time of prayer, reflection, and unity in support of a Pan-African statesman.”

Among those expected to attend are former Ugandan Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda and Captain Mike Mukula, National Chairman of the Pan-African Movement Uganda Chapter.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), which Odinga led for decades, expressed gratitude to Mukula and his team “for this honour.”

The Kampala service follows a national memorial held at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, where thousands of Kenyans gathered to pay their final respects to the veteran opposition leader whose death has left a profound void in the country’s political landscape.

President William Ruto led mourners in describing Odinga as “a towering figure in Kenya’s democracy,” praising his lifelong dedication to justice and public service.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, his one-time rival turned ally, recalled their 2018 “handshake” as a turning point for Kenya’s peace and reconciliation, saying Odinga “believed that Kenya was greater than all of us.”

ODM leaders, including Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, vowed to uphold Odinga’s legacy and his vision for “a just, equal, and united Kenya.”

Regional leaders and diplomats are expected to attend the Kampala service, reflecting Odinga’s enduring impact as a Pan-African statesman who championed democracy and unity beyond Kenya’s borders.

Since he was buried in 19th October 2025, Raila Odinga’s grave has been a beehive of activities. Several delegations have trooped to Kang’o Ka Jaramogi to pay their respects to the former Prime Minister. And from the look of things, the guests won’t stop coming anytime soon.
