Ugandan Mayor, Spokesman Clash On Live TV

On live television on Thursday, the mayor of Uganda’s capital, Kampala, exchanged insults with the government spokesperson before the debate devolved into a brawl and the talk show stopped abruptly.

The government’s spokesman, Ofwono Opondo, and Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago of the opposition FDC party joined two other panelists to debate the recently finished by-election.

Videos trending on Twitter showed an enraged Opondo telling the mayor, “I can push you out of here!”

Opondo later stepped over the mayor during an exchange of heated words before the show was pulled from air. All panelists were believed to have exited the studio safely, and the NBS station apologized to viewers.

Mayor Lukwago described the encounter as “horrible” and “despicable” on Twitter.

“My only prayer is that I get out of this place safely,” he added.
