Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has joined leaders across the African continent in mourning the death of former Nigerian President General Muhammadu Buhari, praising him as a principled statesman whose legacy will resonate across generations.
In a heartfelt condolence message issued on Monday, July 14, 2025, Kenyatta expressed deep sorrow over Buhari’s passing and extended sympathies to the government and people of Nigeria, as well as to the bereaved family of the late leader.
“President Buhari was not only a symbol of resilience but also of integrity. He had a firm stance on his principles and always prioritised the interests of Nigeria and Africa above self,” he stated.
He paid glowing tribute to Buhari’s commitment to public service, describing him as a leader who shouldered the weight of the presidency with humility and unwavering dedication.
Throughout his message, Kenyatta emphasised Buhari’s pivotal role in strengthening the continent’s political, economic, and security frameworks. He hailed the Nigerian leader for his firm anti-corruption stance and his contributions to regional peace and development.
“President Buhari was known for his strong stance against corruption, dedication to national security, and efforts to foster economic reform and regional cooperation. “I fondly remember his state visit to Kenya, where we had extensive and sincere conversations about Africa’s future. Those moments of shared purpose and brotherhood remain close to my heart,” he said.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023 after previously leading the country as a military ruler in the 1980s, was a prominent figure in African politics.
