Uhuru Kenyatta: ODM Must Remain United to Preserve Raila Odinga’s Legacy

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has called on the Orange Democratic Movement to safeguard and advance the legacy of the late Raila Odinga, describing him as the heartbeat of Kenya’s long struggle for justice, democracy and political reform.

His message, delivered in Mombasa by ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna during the party’s 20th anniversary celebrations, struck a solemn tone. Uhuru said Raila’s absence continued to cast a shadow across the nation, noting that the former Prime Minister’s vision and sacrifices left a lasting imprint on the country.

“Wanachama wa ODM, today, as we celebrate this milestone, my heart is emotionally heavy as I remember my brother and friend and compatriot, Raila Odinga. May his soul rest in peace,” Uhuru said.

He portrayed Raila as far more than the party’s leader, framing him as the spirit behind Kenya’s pro-democracy movements. According to Uhuru, Raila’s resilience, courage and refusal to surrender shaped not only ODM but also the country’s political evolution over decades of activism and reform battles.

“Baba was not just a leader of ODM. He was the spirit of his struggle. His courage, resilience and selflessness shaped not just the justice movement, but the very cause of Kenya’s political evolution,” he said.

Uhuru urged ODM members to remain anchored in the values Raila championed, calling on the party to push for equity, inclusion and accountability. He pointed to Raila’s vision of a country where hunger, inequality and injustice no longer define the lives of ordinary citizens.

He expressed hope that ODM’s next chapter would reflect renewal and growth while holding true to Raila’s mission. The celebrations also brought together founding members, including President William Ruto, and featured tributes from Raila’s children, Raila Junior and EALA MP Winnie Odinga.
