Uhuru To Grace Tanzania Independence Day

Tanzania will mark its 60th anniversary of independence on Thursday with a lavish celebration attended by a number of world dignitaries, including Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat arrived in the East African country on Wednesday ahead of the event.

President Uhuru Kenyatta was also anticipated to attend the event at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam, as part of a two-day official visit that State House has yet to confirm.

Kenya’s High Commissioner to Tanzania, Mr Daniel Kazungu, told reporters on December 8 that Kenyatta would attend the celebrations on Thursday, following a special invitation from President Samia Suluhu during her visit to Kenya in May.

“He has travelled to Tanzania on business multiple times but has never paid an official visit.” As a result, the visit will begin tomorrow, Thursday, with participation in the Uhuru Stadium independence celebrations,” Mr Kazungu told reporters.

Kenyatta was expected to witness the signing of multiple trade deals on the second day of his visit, according to an itinerary supplied by Kazungu.

Since Suluhu took over from the late President John Magufuli in April, Kenya and Tanzania have had stronger connections.

The restart of Tanzania’s national carrier operations after two decades is one of the primary features of the reestablished relations.
