UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged Ukraine and Russia to agree to a humanitarian truce as soon as possible to allow the parties to seek a resolution to the month-long conflict.
Guterres said his humanitarian affairs coordinator, Martin Griffiths, will cooperate with Kiev and Moscow to lay the framework for a cease-fire.
Griffiths is planning to visit both capitals “as soon as feasible,” according to Guterres.
On Tuesday, delegates from Russia and Ukraine will meet in Istanbul for new rounds of peace negotiations, as Russia’s attack on Ukraine has been ongoing for almost a month.
The two-day peace negotiations are due to begin at 0730GMT in the presidential Dolmabahce office (10:30AM local time).
According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry, the meetings would be closed to the press.
A private plane transporting the Russian team arrived at Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport earlier today. Later this evening, the Ukrainian delegation is expected to arrive in Istanbul.
