Ukrainian Wrestler Aonishiki Crowned Sumo Champion in Japan

His achievement is even more significant as it places him on the verge of the fastest promotion in history to the second-highest rank of Ozeki.

In an extraordinary rise, Ukrainian wrestler Danylo Yavhusishyn, known by his ring name Aonishiki, has won Japan’s prestigious Emperor’s Cup, becoming the first Ukrainian and the first European in nearly eight years to claim the title.

The 21-year-old’s victory is a story of resilience and rapid success. He arrived in Japan alone in 2022 at age 18, having fled the war in his homeland. Just three years later, he triumphed in a championship play-off against Mongolian grand champion Hoshoryu after finishing the 15-day tournament in Fukuoka with a strong 12-3 record.

His achievement is even more significant as it places him on the verge of the fastest promotion in history to the second-highest rank of Ozeki. When asked if he was satisfied, Aonishiki replied, “No, I think this is just the beginning.”

His journey to the top began in childhood with sumo, judo, and wrestling. After impressing in youth competitions and fleeing to Germany with his family, he moved to Japan with the help of a contact from a university sumo club, not knowing the language.

Aonishiki has quickly gained a global following with his competitive spirit and skillful use of rare techniques. His ring name fittingly contains the Japanese character for “blue,” a nod to the Ukrainian flag. Many now tip him to become the first European ever to reach sumo’s ultimate rank of Yokozuna grand champion.
