UN and China Champion Cultural Unity at Dialogue Day Celebration in Nairobi

The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), in partnership with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Kenya, hosted a colorful and poignant event on Thursday to mark the International Day for Dialogue Among Civilizations. The celebration emphasized the urgent need for intercultural understanding amid rising global polarization and division.

In her keynote address, UNON Director-General Zainab Hawa Bangura emphasized that dialogue is the cornerstone of lasting peace and solidarity. “Where dialogue is missing, ignorance fills the void,” she warned, noting the growing tide of intolerance, xenophobia, and misinformation worldwide. “In today’s fractured world, dialogue is not optional, it is essential.”

Echoing her message, Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Guo Haiyan underscored the power of cultural exchange to bridge divides. “Humanity stands at a historical crossroad, grappling with profound changes and uncertainties,” she said. “Cultural diversity must become a force for unity, not division.”

Ambassador Guo also highlighted the Global Civilization Initiative (GCI), introduced by President Xi Jinping, as a framework for fostering global understanding and cooperation. She called on nations to embrace diversity, engage in mutual learning, and build a future grounded in shared values.

Kenya’s Permanent Representative to UNON and UNEP, Ababu Namwamba, also addressed the gathering, championing dialogue rooted in mutual respect and a collective commitment to peace. He praised China’s leadership in the successful adoption of the UN resolution that designated June 10 as the International Day for Dialogue Among Civilizations, co-sponsored by over 80 nations. “This isn’t just another date on the calendar,” Namwamba said. “It is a rallying symbol for a truly multilateral world.”

The celebration featured a rich tapestry of cultural expression, including traditional Chinese and African music, dance, acrobatics, a fashion show, culinary tastings, and a screening of the Chinese science-fiction film The Wandering Earth 2. The vibrant program highlighted the shared humanity at the heart of every civilization.

As the event concluded, organizers and participants alike reaffirmed their commitment to building bridges across cultures, one conversation, one performance, and one shared experience at a time.
