Barcelona’s unbeaten start to the LaLiga season came crashing down in spectacular fashion as Sevilla struck twice in stoppage time to seal a 4-1 victory at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.
Hansi Flick’s side, chasing a return to the top of the table after Real Madrid’s win on Saturday, were punished for wastefulness and defensive lapses on a chaotic night in Andalusia.
Ronald Araujo gifted Sevilla the opener with a reckless grapple on Isaac Romero inside the area, allowing Alexis Sanchez to calmly convert from the penalty spot. Romero then turned scorer in the 36th minute, sliding home Ruben Vargas’ cross after a slick passing move.
Marcus Rashford gave Barcelona hope deep into first-half stoppage time, blasting in from Pedri’s exquisite through ball. The visitors pushed hard after the break and earned a penalty when Adnan Januzaj fouled Alejandro Balde just seconds after coming on.
But Robert Lewandowski squandered the chance to level, dragging his spot-kick wide. Sevilla capitalised ruthlessly, with Jose Angel Carmona drilling home in the 90th minute before Akor Adams added a fourth to complete the humiliation.
The defeat leaves Barcelona trailing Madrid in the title race, while Sevilla celebrated their finest display of the season.
