University Leaders Fry Judiciary Over Kinoti jailing

FULL PRESS STATEMENT

The Director of Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations Mr George Kinoti has an outstanding record as a fearless crime buster and distinguished officer with high standards of professionalism, fairness, and honesty.

The very mention of his name sends cold shivers down the spines of hardcore criminals both in and out of prison.

DCI George Kinoti has been instrumental in the arrest and locking away of dangerous criminals and terrorists both as a field officer and the various ranks he has held in the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

Undoubtedly, under the tenure of DCI Kinoti, Kenyans have opened a new leaf of cooperation and understanding with the DCI and community policing is now functional for the benefit of wananchi.

With the confidence he has instilled, Kenyans have offered crucial information that has helped solve high-value cases.

Students, who have previously borne the brunt of crime and even police brutality have found in the DCI, a safe haven for refuge and redress. Kenya has never seen a better man at the helm of the DCI than George Kinoti.

However, it is important to note that not everyone is sitting pretty seeing the good work the DCI is doing. A small population of crooks with criminal and terrorism links have sought all available avenues to intimidate, blackmail or harass DCI Kinoti.

The biggest manifestation of these threats yet is the ridiculous, laughable and ill-motivated sentencing of the DCI by Justice Mrima to a four months jail sentence at the Kamiti Maximum Prison. Ironically, Kamiti Maximum prison holds all the hardcore criminals and terrorists that DCI Kinoti has taken off the streets and put behind bars.

We, student leaders, make the following observations:

• New evidence has emerged that explicitly show the whole case against DCI Kinoti was devilishly premeditated and influenced by bribery, coercion and blackmail.

• Mike Makarina, a patriotic Kenyan guided by high moral and civic duty has come out to boldly expose the attempts that were made to bribe him with Ksh. 5M to fix the DCI boss.

• Justice Mrima who oversaw the controversial case and ruling has featured prominently in the unfolding Sonko leaks that have exposed a chain of corrupt judges in the judiciary.

• Persons of vested interests are keen on seeing a complete standoff between the judiciary and all other agencies and arms of the government such as the DCI.

In light of the above, we, therefore, demand that:

• The DCI urgently treats this affront to his office and work as a dangerous threat to his life and urgently reports to the nearest police station so that the people behind it are investigated.

• The whole case be reviewed in light of the new unfolding evidence and bribery claims that have been proven as having been a big driving force in this case.

• The tainted and conflicted Justice Mrima recuses himself from the case and steps aside from the judiciary pending investigations into his conduct following the Sonko Leaks revelations that shed light on his extortionist tendencies.

• The DCI, EACC and other agencies mandated to investigate and fight corruption be cushioned from such counter-attacks from corrupt elements hiding in other arms of the government.

• Licences of civilian gun holders who have a history of misusing their firearms such as Jimmy Wanjigi be immediately revoked and charges preferred against them for abetting crime and terrorism.

• Persons with vested interests in this case such as Jimi Wanjigi be barred from making prejudicial comments over the case pending its appeal and determination.

• The Chief Justice pronounces herself on the increasing judicial activism that is fuelled by bribery, sex allegations and personal vendetta.

Failure to satisfactorily address these demands will force students to take matters into their own hands.
