UNRWA School in Gaza Hit as Combat Rages

The latest airstrike by Israeli forces on a school in Nuseirat, central Gaza, which was sheltering almost 2,000 displaced people, has left tens of casualties.

Philippe Lazzarini, the UNRWA Commissioner-General, strongly condemned this attack.

The incident takes place as the talks about the ceasefire and release of hostages have to be resumed. Earlier attempts in this have not yielded any fruit, though there is huge international pressure.

The fate of these talks depends on how the leaders will have to mold the interests of Hamas in terms of their aspiration for not just ending fights but achieving a permanent end to the conflict and Israel’s aspirations to dismantle the military set-ups of Hamas subsequently to kill about 1,250 and to capture more than 250 hostages during the October 7 attack.

The fighting has left tens of thousands of Palestinians dead, according to the health authority in Gaza. UNRWA reports over 520 deaths and 1,602 injuries among those in its shelters.

The UN’s OCHA says up to 1.9 million people have been displaced, some multiple times. These have been further complicated by hostilities between the Lebanese militants, Israel, and Hezbollah.

On its part, the UNIFIL warns that there are increasing confrontations. Of the conflict, nearly 97,000 people have been displaced from southern Lebanon.

Lazzarini is also pressing for independent investigations into the attacks on UN facilities and repeats that a ceasefire is needed to alleviate the suffering of people on both sides of the conflict
