UoN UASU Members Reject New Constitution, Urge EACC to Probe Top Officials

Members of the University of Nairobi (UoN) chapter of the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) have rejected a newly adopted union constitution, alleging it was passed in violation of established procedures. They are now calling on the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate top union officials for alleged abuse of office.

During a tense meeting, members accused The Registrar of Trade Unions, Ann Kanake, of acting outside her mandate as a labor officer, claiming she irregularly issued a certificate to Secretary-General Dr. Constantine Wasonga, enabling him to benefit from the contested constitutional changes.

According to the disgruntled members, Article 23 of the UASU constitution requires that any amendments be approved by a secret ballot and supported by at least two-thirds of delegates, a process they insist was ignored.

They also allege that Dr. Wasonga, who has served for 10 years, is attempting to use the new constitution to secure another term in office despite being elected under a now-repealed constitution. “How do you just rig yourself in? This is clear impunity,” one member said, accusing both officials of undermining democratic processes within the union.

The lecturers argue that all public officers must operate strictly within the Constitution and the law, warning that unilateral decisions outside these frameworks cannot be tolerated.

The EACC has yet to confirm whether it will open a formal investigation into the matter.
