‘Uppercut’ matatu driver on the run after crash that killed one

Police are still looking for the driver of the public service vehicle that overturned in Tetu Constituency in Nyeri County, leaving one person dead, two seriously injured and several others nursing minor injuries.

The vehicle was seen being driven recklessly along Nairobi-Thika Highway, literally swaying from side to side as it headed towards Nyeri.

This reckless driving was captured on video by a number of Kenyans plying that route on Sunday afternoon, only for the vehicle to overturn hours later.

Police say they came to learn of the incident through the viral videos that were circulating on social media and were on the hunt for the vehicle and its driver before the accident occurred.

The vehicle has a capacity of 33 passengers. Police say the driver is still on the run and suspect that he was drunk at the time of the accident.

Police say the driver’s name is Nicolas Mutwiri and the vehicle belongs to Expresso SACCO from Mwiki, and that the SACCO is willing to work with them.
