Airbnb has launched a major redesign of its app, allowing users to book luxury services such as private chefs, massages, personal trainers, and spa treatments, as the company pushes further beyond its core short-term rental business.
The new offerings will be available in 260 cities and start at under $50 (£37.57). Notably, these services, ranging from makeup artists to photographers, will also be accessible to those not staying in Airbnb properties.
“People choose hotels for their services. People choose Airbnbs for the space… now, we’re giving you the best of both worlds,” said Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky.
The app’s updated “experiences” tab enhances the platform’s 2016-launched service by allowing users to book custom tours and activities. It also introduces an “originals” tab featuring exclusive experiences, such as beach volleyball in Rio de Janeiro with Olympian Carol Solberg and a Sunday with NFL star Patrick Mahomes.
Industry experts say the revamp reflects a broader shift in travel preferences. “Travellers are now thinking much more about how to customise the trip for themselves,” noted Gary Bowerman, director of Check-in Asia. Luxury travel consultant Anastasia Oriordan added that demand for unique experiences continues to grow as seasoned travellers seek out fresh, off-the-beaten-path adventures.
The app overhaul comes amid signs of slowing US bookings, with market uncertainty partly attributed to former President Trump’s trade policies. Despite serving over two billion guests since 2008, Airbnb has faced mounting regulatory hurdles as cities crack down on short-term rentals.
The company’s latest move signals a strategic effort to stay competitive by blending hotel-like amenities with the unique charm of home-based stays.
