US Appoints New Ambassador to Kenya

She will now replace Kyle McCarter, who left in January 2021.

The US Senate confirmed Margaret (Meg) Cushing Whitman as Washington’s new ambassador to Kenya on Thursday, ending a more than a year wait for a substantive head of mission to one of the country’s key allies.

Meg was confirmed by the Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday, about seven months after President Joe Biden nominated her for the position.

She will now replace Kyle McCarter, who left in January 2021.

McCarter, a former US President Donald Trump appointee, resigned after the 45th President was defeated by Biden.

Margaret C. Whitman (Meg), a business executive and former California governor, is a member of the boards of Procter & Gamble and General Motors, as well as the National Board Chair of Teach for America, according to the White House.

She worked in high-level corporate positions for decades, but she was also politically active for many years.

Whitman ran as a Republican for governor of California in 2010, but was defeated by Democrat Jerry Brown.

She backed now-Sen. Mitt Romney’s presidential bids in 2008, before becoming Sen. John McCain’s national campaign co-chair.

She supported Democrat Hillary Clinton in her 2016 presidential campaign against Donald Trump.

According to US media reports, she donated $500,000 to the Biden Victory Fund, a joint fundraising committee that benefited both the Biden campaign and the Democratic National Committee, last year.
