The US embassy in Kenya has congratulated Kenyans for a peaceful, orderly voting and counting process during the 2022 general election period.
In a statement, the embassy asked all political party leaders to continue to urge their supporters to remain peaceful and refrain from violence during the electoral process.
The embassy also noted that IEBC’s declaration of Dr. William Ruto as the president-elect was an important milestone in the electoral process.
“We applaud the efforts of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, security forces, and all electoral institutions to organize peaceful and orderly voting and counting process.
“Under the leadership of Chair Wafula Chebukati, IEBC declared William Ruto the winner of the presidential election. This is an important milestone in the electoral process. We urge all parties to work together to peacefully resolve any remaining concerns about this election through dispute resolution mechanisms,” the statement read in part.
The embassy further commended the active participation of Kenya’s political parties, civil societies and citizens for engaging, shaping, and having robust discussions throughout the campaign period.
Further, the embassy stated that the United States and Kenya share a strong partnership by working together to improve healthcare, promote peace and security in the region, advance respect for human rights, and strengthen our economies.
In conclusion, the embassy said that they look forward to continuing to enhance the partnership with the people and government of Kenya.
The calls by the embassy come amid unrest in some parts of the country after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati declared UDA’s William Ruto President-elect.
