US Embassy Issues Alert Over The ‘Occupy Parliament’ Protests

The United States of America Embassy in kenya has broken it’s silence over the protests that have been organised against the Finance Bill 2024 at the Nairobi CBD.

Through a statement to their citizens, the United States Embassy in Nairobi advised American citizens in the country to stay away from potential hotspots including Nairobi CBD and Parliament Building.

According to the Embassy, even though the protests was marked as peaceful by the organisers, there is a high possibility of violence that could run throughout the day out of the protests and therefore, stay away from these areas.

“There is a planned protest about the Finance Bill of 2024 in the area of the Parliament of Kenya in the Central Business District beginning at 12:00 pm. Organizers have stated that the events are intended to be peaceful. However, large public gatherings can turn violent at any moment. It is advisable to remain vigilant, stay informed of the situation, and avoid large gatherings.”

Furthermore, the embassy advised its citizens to have evacuation plans in place that do not rely on the U.S. government for assistance in case of any outbreak of violence in the country.

This comes after Kenyans planned peaceful protests against the Finance Bill 2024 that kenyans claim that it is impunitive. Several arrests have been made at the Nairobi CBD against kenyans who were participating in the protests.

The report is expected to be tabled in Parliament today to allow MPs to read through the bill before voting is done towards the end of the week.

However, the government released a statement after the Kenya Kwanza Parliamentary group meeting saying that most of the controversial taxes in the finance bill have been scrapped offin a bid to cool down protests in Nairobi CBD.
