US Offers Ksh 1.2Bn Reward For Information On Al-Shabaab Leader for 2020 Lamu Attack

    The US Department of State’s Rewards for Justice program is offering a reward of up to $10 million (KES 1.2 billion) for information leading to the capture or conviction of Maalim Ayman, leader of the terrorist group Jaysh Ayman.

    Ayman is suspected of organizing the January 2020 attack on Kenya’s Manda Bay Airfield, which killed two US contractor pilots and a US Army specialist and injured three other US personnel.

    Jaysh Ayman is an affiliate of the Al-Shabaab terrorist organization, which has carried out attacks in both Kenya and Somalia.

    The State Department designated Ayman as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) in November 2020.

    Manda Bay Airfield is a military base used by the Kenya Defense Forces and the United States Armed Forces to train and support East African partners, respond to crises, and protect US interests in the region.

    The US designated al-Shabaab a foreign terror organization and SDGT in March 2008.
