The US government has offered a reward of $5 million (Ksh 637.5 million) for information leading to the arrest of Ali Mohamed Rage, a suspected senior leader and chief spokesperson of the Al-Shabaab terror group.
According to the US Department of State, Rage helped in the planning of attacks for the group, which has killed thousands of innocent people in Somalia and neighbouring countries.
The reward was announced on Wednesday, and the Embassy stated that “confidentiality is assured” and “relocation may be possible” for anyone who provides information on the terrorist leader.
Al-Shabaab has been responsible for more than 4,000 civilian deaths since 2010, according to records compiled by the independent group Armed Conflict, Location and Event Data Project (ACLED).
“Do you have information about Ali Mohamed Rage? Submit your tip now. You could be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000,000,” the Department’s statement reads.
The majority of the deaths have occurred in Somalia, where the population is almost entirely Muslim, with fewer deaths occurring in Kenya, Uganda, and Djibouti.
Since 2015, over 3,000 people have died.
