US Prepares for Potential Iranian Retaliation as Tensions with Israel Escalate

US President Joe Biden convened his senior national security team on Monday amid rising concerns over a potential Iranian retaliatory attack on Israel.

Biden indicated that preparations are underway to support Israel if it comes under attack, while Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent escalation.

Tensions have surged following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Iran has blamed Israel for the killing and vowed severe retaliation, though Israel has not claimed responsibility.

The US and UK have advised their citizens to leave Lebanon due to fears of Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militia, potentially targeting Israel.

During the briefing, Biden was informed about the uncertain timing and nature of a potential Iranian attack. Blinken had previously warned G7 counterparts of possible strikes within 24 to 48 hours.

The US is also preparing to defend its forces in the region.

Jordan has requested airlines to carry extra fuel as a precaution, while several international airlines have suspended flights to affected areas.

The conflict in Gaza, which began on October 7, has led to significant casualties on both sides, with the situation remaining highly volatile.
